私は、カフェ＆ベーカリー「ぷかぷか」に来ているメンバーさんの誰が、どういう障害を持っているのか、詳しくは知らない。それぞれのメンバーさんが働く様子を見ていて、「このメンバーさんは、この仕事はできる。これはできない」という程度で、なんとなく捉えている。
私は医療者でも教育者でもないので、障害を定義するような知識を備えて、「この人は、○○という障害を持っているから、▽▽の行動をとる」などと考える必要はないし、そういう考え方は、たぶん、あまり好きではない。
ほかの友達や知人に接するときと同じように、「この人は面白い人」とか、「感情がはっきり出る人」だとか、「尊敬できる部分がある」とか、そういう感覚で接するほうが自然な気がするからだ。
ただ、発作やパニックを起こしてしまう可能性がある人については、万が一そのような場面に遭遇した時にちゃんとサポートができるよう、少しは知識を持っていたほうがよいとも感じている。
このブログでも、「障害」「障害者」という言葉を使ってしまうことが多いのだが、そもそも「障害」って何だろう？。「障害者」って誰だろう？。
考えていくうち、分からなくなることがある。
今回は、「ぷかぷか」の話から思いきり脱線するが、７月３日に東京都内で開催された「成人ディスレクシアの就労支援ワークショップ２」に参加させていただき、そこから「障害」について考えたことを書いてみたい。
「ディスレクシア」（Dyslexia）とは、知的には問題がないが、読み書きに困難がある障害のことをいう。?音、?記号、?意味、の３つを結び付けることが上手くいかないことから、読み書きの困難が生じる。
聞いたこと（音）が文字（記号）に結び付かなかったり、文字（記号）が意味に結び付かなかったりする。文書を読んだり、書いたりしたときに、読み飛ばしが多かったり、音読した内容の意味を理解するのにとても時間がかかったりするそうだ。
一方で、「ディスレクシア」の人は、空間認知や創造性に優れているといわれており、建築家や作家、俳優、運動選手や起業家として活躍している人もいる。
今回のワークショップでは、NPO法人EDGE（エッジ）の会長・藤堂栄子さんから、ディスレクシアについての説明を聞き、その後、６人のディスレクシアの方から、それぞれの仕事の内容や、職場の環境などについてお話を聞くことができた。
職場での困難として共通してあげられたのが、「電話の対応」だ。
電話の相手から告げられた「どの会社の」「誰から」「職場の誰に」などの情報を記憶できない。記憶から抜けたり、メモをする際に間違って書くようなことが起こる。このため、職場の同僚や上司に、電話の相手や内容を伝えることができないという問題が起きてしまう。電話を他の電話に転送する操作の手順を、なかなか覚えられないという人もいた。
会議や打ち合わせなどで、誰がどんな意見を発言したかを記録したり、会議の要約を「議事録」としてまとめなければならない作業も困難。
会議を録音して、その録音を起こして対応することもあるそうだが、何倍もの時間がかかってしまう。
このほか、スケジュールの管理をすることが難しかったり、受注の伝票を書くことができないという困難もある。業務のさまざまな場面で読み書きが必要になると、そこで躓いてしまう。
そのような困難があることは、見た目からは、まったく分からない。
このため、「ディスレクシア」についてよく知らない同僚や上司からは、「つまらないところでミスばかりする人」「報告や連絡がきちんとできない人」とみられてしまうかもしれない。
「もっと、きちんとできるはずだ」と過度な期待をされたり、ミスについて「言い訳はするな」と言われることもありそうだ。
問題なくできるように見える人が、些細なミスを重ねたり、業務を滞らせたりすると、期待値が高い分、よけいに不満や怒りを招いてしまうようなことが想像できる。
NPO法人EDGEの藤堂さんは、ディスレクシアの人について、
「勉強ができないわけではなく、勉強をするのに工夫が必要な人」と説明した。
仕事の職種を選んだり、業務の内容や方法に工夫があれば、力を発揮できる人材が少なくないということだと思う。
たとえば、「ディスレクシア」の人と一緒に働くとき、電話の応対や議事録作成などは他の同僚が担い、「ディスレクシア」の人には、強みとしている空間認知や創造性を発揮できる仕事を担ってもらう。業績が上がれば、その職場は、優秀な人材が集まったチームとして高く評価される。
そうなったとき、職場の人々にとって、「ディスレクシア」は大きな問題ではないにちがいない。
私が、「障害」って、何だろう？、「障害者」って、何だろう？と考えるのは、「健常者」と「障害者」の境目や、線引きについて疑問を持つときだ。
「ディスレクシア」の人は、仕事をするうえで工夫は必要だけれども、職場の同僚や上司の理解があり、高いパフォーマンスを発揮できる環境であれば、「障害者」ではなくなるのかもしれない。
「障害」「障害者」を「害」にしてしまうのは、結局、誰なのか？。
困難を抱えている人の才能や能力を十分に発揮できるようなサポートをしない人々や、社会のほうかもしれない。
