カフェ＆ベーカリー「ぷかぷか」は、オープンからもうすぐ２カ月が経過しようとしている。
６月半ば、ひさしぶりにお店を訪ねた。
この日、店頭には、私が好きな「オレンジブレッド」が並べられていた。このパンは、オレンジの皮とパン生地を口の中で一緒に噛んだときの香りと食感がなんともいえない。噛めば噛むほど自然な甘みが出てくる。
「ぷかぷか」のパンは、国産小麦を使用しており、天然酵母で発酵させている。食べたときに感じるのは、パンの生地に「力」があるということだ。オレンジの皮や胡麻などシンプルな食材と合わさると、パンの生地の力がより引き立てられる気がする。
厨房のなかでは、「使い終わった道具を洗うこと」「商品を袋に詰めること」「近隣の学校に外販に行く用意をすること」などの仕事に、障害のあるメンバーさんが携わっている姿を見ることができた。
厨房で洗い物をしていたひとりのメンバーさんに向かって、「おはよう！」の合図で黙って片手をあげると、私の勢いに引っ張られたのか、片方の手が少し上がった。
このメンバーさんは、オープンの日には緊張している様子で、お店の前でうろうろしていた。
「部外者の私が余計なことをしてはいけない」と思いながらも、お客さんが使い終わったトレーを綺麗にする仕事を促してみたのだが、お客さんでごった返している店内にとどまっていることが駄目なようだった。
だから、そのメンバーさんが洗い場で道具を片づけている姿を見れたことは、私にとって発見だった。
他のメンバーさんにも、直接、「ぷかぷか」での２カ月について聞いてみると、それぞれの感想が返ってきた。
「以前に働いていたところよりも、ぷかぷかのほうが楽しい」という人。
「最初は楽しくて、毎日楽しいと思っていたんですけど、仕事は楽しいばかりじゃない、自分でちゃんと仕事をしないといけないって、思っています」という人もいた。
メンバーの一人ひとりが自覚と責任を持って仕事ができるようになるには、まだまだ時間がかかるのかもしれない。
しかし、「ぷかぷか」を訪ねると何かしらの変化を感じる。
お店ができる前の「パン教室」での様子と、「ぷかぷか」のお店ができてからの様子とを比べると、どのメンバーさんもそれぞれの変化があるように思う。
また、メンバーさんの様子を見ていると、私自身が働き始めた頃を思い出す。
自分自身の仕事に重ねて、「働くこととは、何だろう？」と考えさせられる部分も多い。
「仕事は、楽しいばかりじゃない」。
メンバーさんのひとりが話してくれた感想は、会社員として働くなかで、私自身がしばしば感じることだった。
